Skills Lab Leader

About the role

AALB trains people who already speak the languages to work as qualified medical interpreters. The classroom teaches the standards. The Skills Lab is where a learner finds out whether they can hold to them under pressure, with someone experienced watching.

Skills Labs are appointments, booked in advance, running between one hour and one hour thirty. You lead the session, put the learner in situations they will actually meet in a clinic, and afterwards tell them plainly what worked, what did not, and what to do about it.

This is contract work. Sessions are scheduled around the windows you tell us you are free, and you set your own hourly rate.

What you'll do

• Run pre-scheduled Skills Lab sessions of one hour to one hour thirty, on time and prepared.
• Put learners through realistic encounters rather than exercises, and keep the difficulty honest.
• Give feedback a learner can act on: specific, said out loud, and about the interpreting rather than the person.
• Hold the standard when it would be easier not to, including telling someone they are not ready yet.
• Flag learners who are struggling, and learners who are ready for more, so the programme can respond.

What we're looking for

• Professional experience interpreting in medical settings.
• A working command of the interpreter code of ethics, and the judgement to apply it when a situation is not clear cut.
• The ability to explain a thing you do instinctively to someone doing it for the first time.
• Reliable availability in windows you can commit to, since sessions are booked in advance.
• A quiet space and a connection steady enough for a full session.
